A new middle school is opening in Clarksburg in August 2016 at Little Seneca Parkway and Skylark Road.
The naming committee for the new school has unanimously chosen Hallie Wells as the name for the school. Hallie Wells lived in Clarksburg for over 40 years. In 1981, she donated 295 acres of her property at the northern end of Skylark Road to the Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission to preserve this as recreational space for children. This land is called Ovid Hazen Wells Recreational Park and is home to Red Wiggler Farm, which supports adults with and without developmental disabilities.
Hallie and Ovid Hazen Wells were farmers that were concerned about suburban development and protecting the environment. They wanted to ensure children had a place to play and to protect their agricultural heritage. The new middle school is located a mile from the park that bears her husband’s name. It would be fitting if the new school at the southern end of Skylark Road has her name.
Although she and Ovid died childless it would be poetic that their gift to our community would ensure our kids had a place to play and a place to learn. The final decision for naming the school lies with the Board of Education.
If you believe in supporting Hallie Wells please email the Board at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Tell them that you are from the community, that you respect our agricultural heritage, and that you honor their legacy.
